Locally based in Hoedspruit, Limpopo, we know the challenges first-hand. Thousands of South African wildlife reserves face overstocking or have no giraffes due to high costs. We fund safe, science-based relocations — only after a qualified ecologist confirms the new reserve has sufficient food through a carrying capacity report.
Thousands of wildlife reserves across South Africa — each a potential home for giraffes.
Many currently without giraffes due to expensive translocation costs that are out of reach.
Every move requires an ecological carrying capacity report to ensure enough food and prevent habitat damage.
Born in the heart of Limpopo's Lowveld at The Hidden Valley in Blyde Wildlife Reserve near Hoedspruit, the Limpopo Giraffe Initiative is a locally driven NPO.
We created this initiative because we experienced the problem ourselves: our giraffe population grew successfully until it exceeded the reserve's ecological carrying capacity. When we needed to translocate surplus animals, the market was limited — many reserves could not afford the costs.
We know countless other reserves face the same challenge. South Africa has thousands of private and state wildlife reserves. Some are overstocked with giraffes, while many others currently have none because relocation has been too expensive. We change this reality — responsibly.
Every action is guided by science and driven by compassion.
Giraffes relocated only after ecological carrying capacity confirmation ensures their new home can sustain them.
Genetic diversity improved through carefully managed swaps between reserves for healthier populations.
Habitats protected and legal compliance ensured through rigorous ecological assessments.
